Actions now only receive extra processing if they're actually related to the API slice itself, and that processing is done via a loop over handling logic at the end of the middleware unwind phase, rather than nesting function calls through multiple sub-middleware. We've rewritten the internals of the middleware to be more efficient. We've also had some reports that users with multiple API slices were occasionally seeing "Maximum call stack size exceeded" errors. This added multiple function calls to each dispatch's stack trace, and even if there isn't a noticeable perf hit, it wasn't efficient. While this worked well for encapsulating responsibilities, it also meant that every dispatched Redux action had to go through 7 additional middleware. That middleware itself has been made up of 7 individual middleware internally composed into the final middleware, with each individual middleware responsible for a different task like managing polling or cache lifetimes. RTKQ automatically generates a Redux middleware for each "API slice" / createApi call. In theory, with Federation it should be easier to celebrate due to the luxury bonuses (+2 per city) and lower corruption, but Democracy should allow to generate more science due to the extra trade per tile (in non oceanic tiles) and the increased max tax rate (90%). When I said to take into account celebration bonuses of Democracy, I meant it in order to compare it to govs that can't celebrate like Communism or Fundamentalism.įederation and Democracy can be compared without the need to celebrate. I used to do similar comparisons in my games, but it is useful to see them coming from other players/games. If anyone wants to check my stats, I'll attach a savegame. I'm still experimenting with where to put it for maximum effect. This is still without an Ecclesiastical Palace. We can also see that at all stages of the game, Federation is on par with Democracy or better, for science. It won't get better than this for science (without sacrificing production, for scientists) - I'll lose gold as my cities build their remaining defenses.Īt this stage of the game, celebration is better for science for all governments except Despotism and Tribalism. All cities have all gold-producing tiles worked (including all water). I'll attach the game if you doubt these stats.Īnother 30 turns on and all 17 cities have made all improvements to do with science, happiness and gold (Super Highways was the last). There are still some Wonders/Improvements that would increase luxury and the Ecclesiastical Palace hasn't been built yet, so I expect this arrangement to shift a bit, later on. OK, this is while cities are still quite small, the economy is still production centric and offshore-platforms haven't been researched yet (not so many people on the water). But Federation beats Democracy hands down. In this table, first number is bulbs and the second is gold.ĭemocracy and Celebration does worst of all. Gold was turned down so that income was still positive. I turned the luxury up, got the cities to celebrate, and then turned it down as much as possible so that still more than half the cities were celebrating. For this current game, I tested dem and fed, celebrating and not. In civ2civ3, for much of the game, Federation gives you more science than Democracy. I love democracy, and easily beat AI when i can reach this government and start to be leader in technologyĪre you talking about the civ2civ3 ruleset? In classic ruleset I would agree with you. If you already took into account what I said, and you still find Democracy underpowered, please let me know, and tell me the number of cities (or average distance to capital) of your nation when Democracy is no longer useful. Of course, it is suppose to be hard to achieve while you are attacking other nations. It requires to increase a lot the luxury rates to force cities to start celebrating, but the extra trade generated once they are celebrating allows to reduce again the luxury rates, and the resultant output use to be better than any other government. If you don't find use for Republic and Democracy, maybe you are not taking full advantage of Celebration. If you find Federation better even in the case of small nations (I'm talking about 30 cities or so), then it would require some rebalance, but it is not true in my tests.Īctually, I think that Democracy might be a bit overpowered in civ2civ3, and I planned to reduce its empire size in my "earth" version of the ruleset. Specially If you build the ecclesiastical palace, and courthouses in your cities (that halves corruption/waste). The extra trade per tile of Democracy and Republic use to be better than the reduced corruption/waste of Federation. I think it is always the government that allows the highest production of science (to maximize bulbs), except for big empires in large maps, where Federation could end being better, but Democracy would remain better for smaller nations. I don't think Democracy gets obsolete in civ2civ3. ![]() Imho, AI is not a good reference to compare the power of governments. It would be great if this change increases the chances of AIs using Democracy, but in my tests, the governments chosen by the AI change a lot from one version of Freeciv to another. Medical care does not exist in a vacuum from the world around it.Ĭontagious illnesses like Covid-19 bring into stark relief the fact that health is a both a communal good and community effort. The list goes on! But even at our creative best, the medical disparities will remain entrenched unless society is re-envisioned as well. health care system needs to be more flexible and nimble in nearly every aspect - medical care, public health, research, supplies, prevention, communication, vaccination. There has been much talk about how to re-envision the health care system once we’ve achieved the much-coveted settling of the dust. The reasons for the disparity are in plain sight: unequal distribution of economic and housing stability, jobs without sick leave or options for telecommuting, crowded homes that render social distancing elusive, long commutes to jobs and grocery stores that preclude “sheltering in place,” and heavier burdens of chronic disease that contribute to more severe outcomes with Covid. The staggeringly uneven toll of infection and death we have witnessed is a bitter confirmation of the interrelationship between health care and society. When she arrived at the British military hospital in the Scutari region of the Ottoman empire in November 1854, a year after the war had begun, she was horrified to learn that far more soldiers were dying of infection and poor medical care than were dying on the battlefield. Taking a character who initially seemed very one-dimensional and developing him into something far more multi-layered is further credit to the show’s hugely talented writing staff. And with this season, he's gained a sadder aspect that wasn’t really explored in the show’s first season. Ted has been mostly unflappable, until he was not. The season has done a great job of rounding out Ted’s character and developing him into more than just a simple caricature of an eternal optimist. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) led to one of the season’s most emotionally impactful moments with Ted admitting that his father's suicide still weighs on him. His interplay with sports psychologist Dr. Jason Sudeikis is still excellent in the role, and Ted remains as lovable as ever but the character has been given some much-needed depth. ![]() The above isn’t to say that Ted has been neglected this season. ![]() I’m just as keen to pick up Sam and Rebecca’s story next year as I am Ted’s. Ted Lasso season 2 did a marvelous job expanding the show’s world and showcasing a full scope of interesting characters in and around Richmond. He’ll surely be looking to relegate AFC Richmond from the Premier League next season. In the closing moments of season 2, we learned he’s now managing London-rival West Ham. Of course, the best arc of the season was given to assistant coach Nathan Shelley (Nick Mohammed) who’s gone from bumbling kit man to a loveable sidekick, to full-on villain. Although, the response to that one was fairly mixed (I personally enjoyed it). Even Coach Beard got his own episode this season. The reveal that Rebecca had been texting Sam all along was a series highlight for me. Once we all agreed that he wasn’t a CGI construct, we were able to appreciate the well-written arc that saw him struggle to deal with retirement before ultimately finding his calling as a coach himself - and even making some form of peace with arch-rival Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster).Īnother fantastic plot point has been the relationship between club owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and young player Sam Obisanya (Toheen Jimoh). The show may bear his name, but this is no longer just the Ted Lasso show.īasically, the entire internet has fallen in love with Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), and for good reason. Perhaps the main reason I prefer Ted Lasso season 2 over its predecessor is that the entire cast is now being utilized to their full potential. ![]() Thankfully, the comedy writing in Ted Lasso season 2 is much sharper and mines gags from more unexpected places. This came as a great relief to me as by the end of season 1 I was starting to get a little tired of endless jokes that revolved around Ted misunderstanding a common aspect of English culture. He’s now a fish well acclimated to his surroundings, and while there are still a couple of jokes about his lack of soccer understanding for the most part the show derives comedy from other situations. These gags can be humorous, but they’re also very repetitive in nature.īy the time Ted Lasso season 2 starts, the affable coach has been living in England for a full year. Ted Lasso season 1 makes dozens of jokes at Ted’s expense for failure to understand everything from the basic rules of the sport he’s coaching to his confusion with the local currency. As a college football coach who moves to England to become a top-flight soccer manager, he’s not only clueless about the sport but also about the customs of the country he’s living in. The first season of Ted Lasso is certainly a well craft collection of episodes, but it does lean on one comedic trope quite heavily: the idiot abroad.Īdmittedly, the show gets an awful lot of mileage from Ted being a fish out of water. ![]() The phrase that Ruby signs at the end of the film is also a poignant example of how the language can have variations and be personalized by those using it. Coming from a deaf family, it is natural that her first language, and one she is most expressive in, is ASL. Thus, when Ruby tries to explain to her music teacher how she feels when she sings, she shifts to using sign language because English words don’t seem to suffice. It is essential to keep in mind that sign language is not a “hand signal” version of spoken dialogue but a separate language (which differs from place to place, like any other language). Therefore, the film’s multiple deaf cast members bring in their own natural style of conversing in ASL, and dialogues even include idioms and phrases specific to ASL for authenticity.Įven the film’s captions during ASL scenes are essentially translations and are not literal, word for word, representations of what the characters are saying to each other. In fact, the film’s script was apparently adapted into ASL, which is a language with its own grammar and nuances. One of the major aspects that sets ‘CODA’ apart is its authentic use of sign language. As she drives away after one last hug, Ruby leans out of the car and signs to her family as they disappear in the distance. The scene is touching for many reasons, from the Rossi family having to bid goodbye to their youngest member, who has also been their bridge to the hearing world, to Ruby’s exciting new beginning at Berklee. ‘CODA’ ends with Ruby getting into Berklee and moving out of the home she has shared with her family all her life. The Meaning of the Sign at the End of CODA If you’re wondering about the meaning of the sign Ruby makes at the end of ‘CODA,’ we’re here to explain it all to you. In fact, you might have noticed that a few ASL dialogues aren’t even captioned, seemingly because words may not suffice to communicate the feeling. The film feels significantly authentic with extended portions of its dialogues in American Sign Language (ASL). With this in mind, the ending of The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is a fitting one, encompassing the immense emotional and moral depth of a saga that is intrinsically unforgettable.Director Sian Heder’s film gives audiences an intimate look at the family’s dynamics, Ruby’s role in it, and how they fit into the larger community. Vincent’s potential rise as a new power, and eventual fall, indicate that he too will be touched by the quintessential Corleone curse, which is the curse of harboring a guilt so profound, so heavy, that it destroys the ones associated with it. Coppola envisioned Vincent’s reign as deviating from the family’s morals, as he would enter the drug trade, essentially driving the Corleone clan back into corruption, rending the cycle of destruction complete. ![]() If that were to happen, the new ending positions Vincent in the same space of grief, guilt, and anguish as Michael, owing to the fact that he too, is haunted by the death of Mary, the girl he loved. Having lost everything by the end, Michael is an intensely lonely soul, with no one to turn to, with no hope, no respite.Īccording to Coppola and author Mario Puzo, the duo envisioned another arc for Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia), the successor to Michael, which could potentially function as source material for The Godfather IV, as per Paramount’s admittance that the sequel could be a possibility. The Godfather Coda also reveals that Michael’s quest for legitimacy is an illusion, as those in power always resort to violence, and their acquired legitimacy is simply a product of crooked power play. “ A Sicilian never forgets”, the audience is reminded, which only serves to highlight how the guilt of not one, but many deaths - Mary, Fredo, Apollonia - haunt Michael, who has now become a shell of the man he once was. The new cut of The Godfather Part III ends by wishing him Cent’anni, which roughly translates a hundred years, which won’t nearly be enough for Michael to atone, as atonement is now beyond him. In an almost cruel manner, Mary ultimately pays with her life for the sins of her father, thereby extinguishing all hope for Michael to achieve expiation in this lifetime. ![]() At the end of The Godfather Coda, redemption eludes Michael, as he is rendered spiritually dead after the loss of Mary, who can be viewed as someone untouched by guile or sin.
